Government Is Necessary.
We need government to put a society in order. Without governance, the society would be a caos.

Probably yes.
Although, I would be one of the people who could live without it, it is still needed to protect the people and their liberties.

So, pretty much the way the founding fathers thought it should be...

Yes,but the government is becoming way to controlling and needs to back off. They keep putting limits on are rights and not dividing by the constitution.

It has all been said, without governance, there would be nothing to stop the big bad wolf from eating the little guy. Government is duty bound to do more, but, that is the minimum.

Government is the stronghold in our known universe. Without good government our society would be run by hooligans of gangsters and that is not a good thing especially economically.

My God, some people actually believe government isn't run by hooligans and gangsters.
Who had the power in the playground? It is just a bigger playground.
Democracy is naive.

Governments are necessary in simple terms to avoid the problems of a free market economy. There are bound to be imbalances in incomes of areas. The government is there to try and reduce this. There will certainly be an over production of demerit goods such as alcohol and tobacco which have a larger cost on society than the economic costs to the individual. There would obviously be a shortage of goods which provide more benefit to society than the benefit to the individual, such as education. The government is necessary to govern an economy and promote equality and social well being.

Thomas Paine summed it up in one sentence best.

"Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one."

It's worth pointing out that even wolves have a form of government; a dictatorship led by an Alpha.

We need government to keep the country in order. Without it we'd have nothing but anarchy which would lead to ultimate ruin.

Rebuttal to Verum:

"Perhaps humanity would not break out into a chaotic free for all, but rather become one rightous society,"

A society is a form of government. A government does not need to be official like the one we know in the United States. A government DOES NOT need to be formed from a constitution. A government is something that all people work in to improve the state of SOCIETY.

To have a government, is more than to have a society. Surely you must agree. what's a government without a dictator, senate, a republic, or any one who is in charge?

I agree.. As much as i think the Government as let Britain down i still think its needed to bring around change and keep some kind of order.. The decisions they make aren't always the right ones.. And not everyone agrees but if it wasn't the government making the wrong decisions in a controlled way then it would be society... And yes.. The whole place would be chaos.

As much as I dislike the current government and the mess they are making of my country (UK), I do believe that they are necessary.

Without a government, the country would fall to pieces!

As much as we love to hate them, governments are necessary for order, even if we disagree with the order (e.g. Saddam's Iraq)

Consider Thomas Hobbes' theory of Natural Law. It states that man has two desires: Fear of death, and want for power. In order for society to exist properly, those two desires need to be balanced out. What government does is they increase our fear of death by lowering their desire for power. The most commonly accepted way of gaining power is by committing crimes, as you are gaining control of a situation. The government can increase fear of death by lowering their desire their power subtlely through certain venues (police officers, lethal injection).

If government was not in place to establish those venues, then chaos ensues because people's desire for power is too high to manage, by making subsequent leaders without any order to control them. Anarchy is next, then some sort of apocalypse.

Government is essential to providing a civil way of life. Without it, undoubtedly some crazy guy would attempt and rule over the mass of un-governed people.

I agree there is a need for a form of government. Throughout history tribes have had government through village elders.

I believe the question is what sort of government do we want? I would want a Government that is free from the pressure of outside interests and that was transparent and had integrity. I do not believe this is achievable so we will have to make do with what we have.

The path of a child from childhood to a successful person is solely dependant to his or her guide or her parents. Likewise, the success story or the advancement of a country is exclusively dependant on its government. Without a government, a country can not be able to make progress. Government stands there for the regulation of laws and orders of the country. It also regulates the economical structure, provides general public services. To make the country run in a civilized way and obstruct one from doing anything of his choice are the main feature of a government. Without it a country will be full of chaos and could not be able to survive in the retrace. The general mass wants a security which the government produces. They need someone to take care of their demands which are thoroughly supplied by the government.

A certain amount of government is necessary, government is the political arm of the people, we vote for our representatives and it is our responsibility to watch what they do and get rid of them if they fail us. It's sad to watch so many people act like the government is this evil autonomous entity out there that we have no control over. Sure we do, but only if you VOTE!

The problem is, politicians become corrupt and the people don't notice until it is too late, and then they won't band together to throw off the corrupt government.

It is of course necessary, regardless of how poor the leadership is, because of the fact that humans NEED some form of leadership. Otherwise, we simply fall into a state of chaos as everyone runs amok trying to satisfy their own needs. We need laws and rules to dictate how we live our lives (and for those of you that complain about the laws of your country, no one's forcing to live here, O.K.? It's YOUR decision to live here). A structured government is what keeps society moving smoothly, otherwise too much time is spent arguing about what should be done, to what extent, and who will carry out those actions.

I would like to add that good democratic government is necessary. There are many governments in the world which don’t offer the due services to the citizens. Government is necessary because it is a central body which regulates and maintains the system of the country. A few duties of the governments for their citizens are;

Security
Free Health Services
Unemployment Benefits
Free Education
New born child scholarship
Free Recruitment Services
Free Online Libraries
Good infrastructure of roads and buildings

So you can clearly see that a government is necessary to run the system of the country.

Government is necessary, but you totally have the wrong idea of what the government is supposed to do. The only one on your list that is not part of a communistic government is security. The government is here to protect private property rights, make sure contracts are kept, and provide national defense. You still have the Keynesian view of the government and the economy.

Yes, of course government is necessary. It can be proved from the following points:

1) Governments maintain the law and security in the country completely.
2) Governments control the inflation level in the country.
3) Governments collect taxes from the public and then use that collection of funds on their public for their welfare.
4) Governments try to provide the maximum health facilities to the general public.
5) Governments provide employment opportunities to the deserved unemployed people.

Above are just a few points that show how important a Government is.

Lmao you are wrong on every single one of those points, all of them are WRONG!!
Government doesn't maintain the law and security of the land, the Law Courts do,
They need not control inflation in a country in the UK that duty is given to the Bank of England.
They dont use taxes neccesarily for the public welfare because the spending of that money is outside the direct control of the general public. They don not try and provide the maximum healthcare for the public that is not on their political adgenda, and the last point is wrong in that the workers earn their jobs and the undeserved get paid for doing nothing due to social benefit.

Definitely! Government and government organizations are necessary because without different institutions which are functioning under government, no country can proceed in developments. It is a responsibility of a government to provide peace and stability in the society.

A government is also liable for economic problems and their solution.

Similarly government can manage the army of the country.

Judicial systems can not work without the support of government.

That's why government is necessary.

It all depends on how you apply the word necessary with the situation of mankind.

We would all still exist, we just don't know how. Its easy to narrowly predict what would happen, but its hard to find a real answer to how our inavative species could intaract without a system of government.

Perhaps humanity would not break out into a chaotic free for all, but rather become one rightous society, free of war, and survive for the better of our species.

Some may argue a society lacking government will cease to create a productive system of education, and civil services, but have you ever thought that we humans as a race would do better off.

Imagine a world where humans lived simple nomatic lives, with only concerns of food an shelter. The lack of power and control would create a world with no war. There would be nothing to fight over. If there was any war it wouldn't be nearly as large scale as what we have today.

If you believe of universal morals then I would think we would do just fine with no government. The lack of technology would force us to work together and live as a species, rather than indivuals.

It's difficult to accept authority as the truth, rather the truth as authority. If mankind existed with no government, and did breakout into a chotic free for all, it would still resemble the society we live in today. It would merely be the difference of fighting for yourself and your own beliefs, rather than your government and its beliefs.

"We need government to put a society in order. Without governance, the society would be a caos"a bit assuming but possible. Government also causes war. That farmer may hate that other farmer but does that mean they are going to fight about it? That tribe of farmers and that other tribe of farmers hate each other but does that mean there going to fight about it? Government is a bit more likely of war as you are giving a guy who you don't know if he is sane or not the right to speak for you and order you around.

We only need about half the government we now support. The tail is wagging the dog, and has been for several years now.
When the government works for the citizens, as it should, it's a vital resource for the country. Once it starts using the citizens for it's own gain, it's no longer a positive force
The government needs to have a severe overhaul, and get back to running it's agenda for the citizens. There's way too much waste and the needs of hard working citizens are too often ignored.
The overbearing government has become more a detriment than asset to many hardworking citizens. We're stepping closer to a dictatorship all the time.

Society is in chaos! Hello, where do you live? A new government must be developed that doesn't force others to do its will. We are a diversified bunch, us humans, we have to do "what works" and stop doing "what doesn't work" Americans hands are fried to the bone, because we keep touching the "hot stove" and wondering why our hands hurt.

Just for fun, I will play devil's advocate. (These are not my personal views).

"Justice is nothing more than the advantage of the stronger"
-Thrasymachus

This means that those who are the powerful in a society, decide what is justice in accordance with their own preference. They use the cover of justice to make their own advantage stronger and the ability of the weaker to grow more powerful less likely. If any ideas for better forms of government were to come about, then they would have very little chance of succeeding within that society. How are we then to decide on the morality within a society if we cannot change it based on individual opinion?

Plato expressed the idea that we are basically good and the world has corrupted us. If this is true, then if left to our own devices, humankind would be far better off without the possibility of being corrupted by the views of justice as decided by those in power.

All governments are justice-deciders.
Some justice-deciders are not moral things
Therefore, Some governments are not moral things

All moral things are necessary things
Some governments are not moral things(As Proven Above)
Therefore, Some governments are not necessary things

Because the title of the resolved topic is an absolute statement (implying: All governments are necessary things) then only one particular instance of a contradictory proof will disprove the resolution, by the Law of Noncontradiction(If A is A, it cannot also beNonA). I have proven one instance where government would not be necessary due to the interest of moral laws and so therefore the resolution is negated and government is in fact, not necessary.
