Banning entire breeds seems harsh, especially if the list of banned dogs includes German shepherds.
That's ridiculous. They don't seem a particularly vicious breed to me, even though they look
formidable. I had a German Shepherd once that was completely gentle. In fact, he was supposed to
have been trained as a guard dog, but they threw him out of the guard dog school because he wasn't
fierce enough.
That said, we have to recognise that dogs are basically artificial creatures that have been shaped
by human interference. Dogs were wolves originally and have evolved into the many varieties we see
today through us favouring some characteristics over others. It's not impossible, in theory, that
vicious behaviour could be particularly associated with one breed, if we humans chose to favour
those characteristics over the course of dog evolution.
The solution may be to create a stronger element of personal responsibility for the owner of a dog
which does harm to others, such as by, for example, imposing huge fines or even a prison sentence if
the dog attacks someone. That way says, sure, you can have your Rottweiler, but if it attacks
someone, you pay the price. This would focus the minds of dog owners, and make them really use their
judgement about how vicious or otherwise their dog was. |

They deserve a chance in well controlled settings in low population areas. They absolutely should
NOT be in highly populated areas where if they do go off like a weapon lots of innocent people could
be at risk.
And frankly, if out of all the hundreds of breeds of dogs a person has to choose they deliberately
pick one of the two or three known to be vicious beasts then that says something about the owner of
the dog too. They want the power and fear and in your face flaunting to society. And thus I have
no sympathy for them when society says they're going to put their dog down because it mauled off the
face of a little girl.
Seriously, tell me why a German Shepherd or Cocker Spaniel isn't an acceptable breed to you?
They'll do everything your Pit Bull would do as a pet. |

Some breeds are more aggressive, naturally. It's just the way it is. |
