Electronic Smokeless Cigarettes Are Allowing Smokers To Continue The Same Action As Smoking And Supplies Nicotine Without The Burning Of Tobacco Which Decreases The Risk To The Smoker's Health And Can Be A Positive Choice For Those Around Them.
The FDA is attempting to ban the sale of these electric cigarettes or e-cigs. While there is a need for more extensive testing, we already know that regular cigarettes kill. There is no doubt that smoking anything is worse for one's health than smoking nothing, but why should a product that cannot be as lethal as a cigarette be banned? These e-cigs do not produce smoke so there is no negative health implications for those who are around someone who is using one. Seems like money is more important than our health to me.

They're just swapping one addiction for another; if it weren't the smokeless cigarettes it would be food or some other vice.

That is exactly correct. Actually, it is still the same addiction...nicotine. The smokeless cigarettes are not advertised nor are they suggested to be used in an effort to stop smoking. That would be silly...keep doing all of the same things and get the nicotine, but somehow just quit..lol. I think people are looking for a safer alternative and for one that is not harmful to those around them. Also, there is much less waste and smokers who "vape" no longer have to run outside to get the nicotine they crave. They call themselves "vapors" and state that they no longer smoke. They are technically correct because there is nothing burning...just an atomizer that evaporates a small amount of the nicotine liquid into a vapor that is inhaled in the same way as the smoke from a cigarette is. Not only that, but people say they are feeling better, don't smell like an ashtray, have a return of their sense of smell and are happy to be free from the many well established dangers of smoking a tobacco cigarette.

I'm all for anything that helps people cut back or quit smoking. Granted not everything works for everyone, and not everything is 100% safe either.

Hard to know which side to post on this one, is it "For" the help quitting smoking, or "For" the FDA restricting the product which helps quit smoking?

I had thought that the for column would be in favor of the electronic cigarettes. I totally agree with the nicotine liquid that is used to produce the vapor being regulated. People are ordering this stuff off of the internet. Who knows if they are getting something that someone cooked up in their basement and if is safe or the same as the last batch...that is something that makes me a little bit nervous unless it is a well known site with the results of the testing of their liquid published on the site. Aside from some assurance that one is getting the product that they ordered, I think that it's fairly obvious that something that contains over 4,000 chemicals which is then burned while one smokes and inhales those chemicals and exposes others to the second hand smoke, must be more lethal than something with 4 ingredients. Even if there is a risk involved, it would have to be a much smaller risk. That seems logical even without a single test run. They have, however, done some testing and it was not even extensive. Still there was only a tiny fraction of any harmful toxin compared to a regular cigarette.

The big tobacco companies and the pharmaceutical companies are quite alarmed by this new technology. None of the current nicotine replacement therapies on the market are very effective. I suspect that is why the tobacco companies don't care much about them. They do provide nicotine, but they do not simulate the actual act of smoking. That is something that many smokers find almost as difficult to give up as the nicotine....not quite, but it is a difficult hurdle for a lot of people. I hope that the FDA does the right thing here. If this product can decrease the number of tobacco related deaths, many people will live longer, healthier lives and families won't be devastated by the loss of a loved one that they know could have been prevented.

I am positive people are going to modify these e-cigs so that they can hide regular cigarettes.in them, and then they will tell people who choke from the smoke that they are just imagining the stench..

Actually, most of the people who use them have quit smoking regular cigarettes or they have cut way back to just a few a day. People smoking three packs a day are now down to one or two cigarettes...like the morning one that is one most smokers really want the most. The electronic cigarette is a battery and the top is an atomizer (very small) and the cartridge (also small) that has the nicotine in it. The battery is the long, cigarette looking part. No one could put a cigarette in there. Also, I think that most smokers do know that they are slowly killing themselves and do want to quit, but have not had success with any of the nicotine replacement products that are on the market currently because none of them simulate the habit. Nicotine, in and of itself, is not what causes cancer. It is toxic in high doses because it's a poison. A small level of nicotine delivered in a vapor instead of toxic smoke is safer and allows smokers to continue the same habit and provides the nicotine without any second hand smoke. Of course it is better not to use any nicotine and that means not chewing the FDA approved nicotine gum for the rest of one's life too, but for those who cannot seem to give up the habit and who are so addicted that they are never successful at quitting, at least they can turn to a product that offers them a chance of not developing all of the cancers that are associated with a tobacco cigarette.

FDA is showing its true colors again of trying to protect the tobacco lobby and smokers are idiots for being a slave to those corporations.

The FDA is showing it's true colors, but some of us who started to smoke and became addicted as kids are desperate to find some way to find a healthier alternative to smoking a burning tobacco cigarette. I personally didn't start smoking until I was 19, but I loved the first one I had and I have tried to quit many times over the years. There is some research that suggests that there are some people who will never be capable of breaking their addiction to nicotine. I have strong will power for other things, but even with the patch, I can't make it for very long without missing the actual habit of smoking. For some who have had success in kicking this terrible habit that takes the lives of far too many of our friends and loved ones it probably seems like a weakness when another smoker cannot put the things down. No two people are alike though. I have seen my father pass from smoking related illness and my mother is dying of cancer now. I know that I need to stop smoking. The electronic cigarettes deliver a realistic smoking experience, which no other nicotine replacement therapy on the market does and they do not contain over 4000 chemicals found in a tobacco cigarette.
