I think that the Earth Hour phenomenon is a media gimmick aimed at getting people to think more
seriously about the environment and asking us to considering altering our lifestyles, in order to
lower CO2 emissions. Earth Hour is mainly symbolic and, in the grand scheme of things, unpluggling
your lamps for such a short period of time is not terribly effective in terms of lowering emissions.
Earth Hour really does seem to be a form of tokenism. Having the Weather Network tape their
programming outdoors during Earth Hour is but a small drop in the bucket, considering that the next
morning they--along with all the other stations around the world that did not participate in this
ritualistic exercise--were back indoors, using copious amounts of electricity.
Although I do support most 'green' efforts, I am starting find the form of environmentalism
developing in the west to be increasingly cultish and ritualistic. Earth Hour is but one example of
this trend. |

Earth Hour is a way to get people to stop and THINK something that they don't do often. Everyone is
too caught up in the lets see how fast we can go and then lets forget that we are not only
destroying our planet but all the vital life on it. And this is something that no one can argue with
me . I live in Alaska and I see the destruction of life that is going on from this. Earth Hour is a
awesome eye opener if you ONLY OPEN YOUR EYES |

Earth Hour was started to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced: Global
Warming. Earth Hour is the process of turning off the lights for one hour, thus decreasing the need
for electrical power, which is largely produced by coal fired generators. It is a worldwide reminder
about the need for action on global warming. It is a part of a major campaign to encourage people to
take simple steps to ensure reduction of emission on a regular basis. To a lot of people, Earth Hour
may seem like a major inconvenience. However, they ought to realize that it is only temporary, for
the moment. It is also important to understand that the consequences of ignoring this, a form of
warning, will ultimately be very severe. Our future generations will suffer from our actions, and we
do not want that to happen. |

For a start if you had dinner before it was dark that wouldn't have been an issue, so that point is
nullvoid,
Secondly Western Power said that there was a noticeable dip in the energy usage and thus CO2
emissions in Western Australia, and i assume these results were reflected all around the world.
Although turning off your lights for an hour once a year wont make a difference, it is aimed at
getting people to consider there energy usage, and the ways that they can conserve energy usage,
such as turning off the TV when you leave the house, and turning lights in rooms that are not
occupied off all contribute to reducing global warming!!!
And could i add in that it was an AMAZING SIGHT standing in the centre of Perth Western Australia;
(Referred to as the city of lights) CBD and being able to see stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So no i don't
think it was a waste of time, but more a mind opener!! |

Earth Hour helps countries save just a little CO2 emissions, and helps our planets seemingly
exponential greenhouse gas problem. Australia saved around 5% of its emissions; this is a lot,
although the number '5' seems little. If you don't believe that is has an effect, don't participate. |
