E-mails, MSN And Text Messages Are Replacing The Art Of Letter Writing.
Gone are the days when people write long meaningful letters to each other. These days it's all about instant forms of messaging. I am all for modern technology and I use the above methods myself frequently, however I think it is a shame that the younger generation will probably never have to write letters in the course of their lives. Any thoughts?

Yup they are but its not a bad thing
its just us moving on to a more modern way of communication it'll be hard for some to let go of the past but just like we moved from cave paintings and telegrams. Old traditions die hard

I am in two minds, hand written words say so much more than just words do. They can tell about the mood of the author, the health and the emotional wellbeing of that person far better than typed script. Handwriting is compelling in that the reader is able to garnish far more from a hand written article than typed text.

I agree and for the better, too. At least you can read all the new technology! Imagine For and Against if you had to work out what everybody scribbled down.

Yes, but it's not necessarily a bad thing - providing text-speak doesn't take over the world (I know language evolves, but it being everywhere would all seem a bit "1984's Newspeak" to me) I see an email as the same as a letter - just cheaper, better for the environment and pleasingly faster.

Texting and E- mail is the new modern way to communicate with friends and family, so yes mail writing is becoming non- existent. Everything is pretty much done online. Our society is becoming more dependant on technology to do our work for us.

While it is a shame that the art of letter writing is being lost, emails are much more practical and are practically instant. Unfortunately this also means that the English language is being lost, with abbreviations and 'text-talk' now becoming part of the spoken language as well.

Yes, I agree. Instant messaging and emails are replacing letter writing and you're right in saying that it's a shame that the younger generation won't need to write letters. It is useful to be able to use the modern technology that's available today, but I feel we should also keep up the older methods of communication.

You think instant messaging is replacing the letter? I think it's REPLACED it. Past tense. But I still write meaningful letters for birthdays and such like. As long as the human race knows how to hold a pen, the letter will not die, just become less practical and more unpopular.

E-mails are the superior form of communication. Letters are a thing of the last century.

The world is advancing to the modern era. This is just the beginning of a global set of changes. Letters are definitely being replaced.

Letter writing was replaced by the telephone long before e-mail, MSN and text messaging. With the price of a stamp and the time it takes for a letter to arrive by mail, e-mail is much better.

Personally I would say Emailing has reinvigorated the art of letter writing.

My Gran told me recently that in the days before 'phones you could write a letter in the morning inviting someone round for lunch and post it. You would receive a reply hours later from your friend confirming they will be round.

This is exactly the same principal as the email.

10 years ago I would rarely communicate with the written word. I would use the 'phone or nothing. Nowadays I write much more frequently.

Good point, I agree with you. The convenience of email make people write more, not mention the text message of mobile phones.
