Douglas Adams Was, And Still Is The Greatest Science Fiction Author Of All Time
Adams used his books to express incredible, and occassionally plausible solutions to problems that faced the world when he was around. The way he could tell a thousand pictures with just a few words, the way he could articulate, and still keep the humour in his writing. I would like to know other reasons why he is the greatest EVER, or if you think someone else is better?

I agree that he was ONE of the greatest science fiction writers of all time. I also think that Michael Criton was also good. (The man who wrote Jurassic Park). Both men were exceptional writers. I like Douglas Adams because he wrote of things that people could never image. He had a very vivid and wild imagination and it came through in his writing. He has a good style that attracts the writer's attention and keeps it. I also like how he mixes science fiction with comedy. That is a great way to spice up the genre. If you have never read Douglas Adam’s work, you should make an effort to do it. You will really enjoy his works.

"It hung in the air in exactly the same way as a brick doesn't."

Every sentence that Adams ever wrote was pure genius. Such a shame that he died so young just as he was coming out of his 'writers block'.

Absolutely not. Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, Pohl, even Jack McDevitt...

As much as I loved the Guide, it's a stretch to call it science fiction. It's like Star Wars, something else masquerading as SF. Philosophy, really. But its true genre is comedy.

My favourite has to be Arthur C. Clarke, the guy who wrote the Odyssey series. He is the father of modern Science Fiction and he is took part in the revolutionary movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Can anyone remember the Star Gate scene? Anyone dare to tell me that wasn't revolutionary?

No way there are plenty of other fiction authors that are way better.

Adams' books used to be a kind of teenage bible for me and my friends, although it's been a while since I've read them. Maybe I need to dust them off the shelf but, as things stand, I wouldn't rate him as the greatest science fiction author of all time. Perhaps, through some deeply-ingrained prejudice, I just can't rate humorous writing as highly as non-humorous writing.

I'd say the greatest science fiction writers of all time were :

William Gibson, who imagined the cyber age before it happened. His achievement was to make science fiction touch the present in a Bladerunneresque way. Instead of unreal utopias in which everyone walked around wearing brightly-coloured, skin-hugging spandex, we got imaginable realities in which corruption, decay and greed co-existed with advanced technology.

Iain M. Banks - the master of Space Opera. Read "Use of Weapons" then spend the rest of your life trying to forget the ending.

Frank Herbert deserves an honourable mention for his Dune novels, although his other novels aren't of the same quality.

Peter Hamilton's novels are compelling reads (at least after the first few in which he was learning his craft) with great plots, although a bit shallow character-wise.

I weren't entirely sure which side to put my mark on, but here I am.....

Loved the hitchhikers guide as a radio script and as a television show, but the books aren't written particularly well. Don't get me wrong, I could quote Adams forever, just the books really don't do it for me.

Orwell i would say is a better science fiction author.

I didn't like the TV series at all, maybe because I read and loved the books first.

Orwell probably is the "Daddy" of them all.

 Two questions:
1. Who is the best Science Fiction author of all time?
2. Why is he/she the greatest Science Fiction writer of all time?
persuade me...
