Traditionally the government has been involved in marriage because in this case the government is
protecting the "good of society". In our US government it is often debated whether or not the
government should be involved in our personal lives and freedoms. In the case of traditional (one
man and one woman) marriage is historically the best way to raise and care for children. Study
after study demonstrate that this is the case today.
Therefore, the government, for the common good, has a duty to protect marriage. |

It matters what you are talking about.
1. Same/sex different/sex marriages Same/race different/race marriages.
2. Parents abusing children by forcing them to have sexual intercourse or physical or mental
harassment.
1. I have no problem with this if they want to marry anybody they want more power to them the
government is supposed to be separated from the church that says gays are evil and racist agencies
that say different races are inferior or evil.
2. This is going against the rights of the children and needs to be stopped. People tend to argue
that the children like these things, but that is because they were raised in that kind of
environment where they were constantly being hurt or abused and are taught to like it. The
government has to step in to stop this or else it will just continue |

A US Supreme Court decision from 1878 effectively determined that polygamy was not supported by the
Constitution. The ruling argued that US authorities and Republican politicians (who had campaigned
against both polygamy and slavery in the 1860s) could ban multiple marriage and in doing so, they
would not contravene the spirit of religious freedom, mainly because such a ban would be against a
concrete practice, rather than a belief. In other words, Americans (like Fundamentalist Mormons)
could both believe and openly teach about the sanctity of polygamy without fear of prosecution, but
they cannot legally put it into practice.
There is a point of view, however, which maintains that the government should get out of the
marriage business altogether, and leave it to churches. Those who do not want a church ceremony and
all those who live in a same-sex relationship, which many churches may not support, could simply
live together as a common law couple, and enjoy all the legal benefits of those who are married,
specifically as they relate to inheritance. |

One of our laws is that being married to more than one person is wrong. Anyone who breaks this law
is subject to punishment. Same sex marriage is a different matter. It has never been clearly
stated which is why it is up for debate now. |
