I think the Marines are, unfortunately, front-line fodder. Maybe the Greek Spartans were too. The
Green Berets, Navy Seals, CIA Black Ops and even the Army Rangers are all more elite, more like the
Spartan elite "300" of historical fame. |

Actually, when I was in the service, the marines were our gate guards. They are better trained than
the army soldiers, but they can't compare with the Navy Seals....neither can the green beret.
I'd put a Navy Seal against any Spartan, remove both there armor, and let them go at it.
No your fodder is most definitely..... Army infantry. |

I respect the capabilities, dedication, and sacrifices made by our modern military soldiers. But,
sorry, I don't think of them as "Spartan's".
1) Most modern fighting is not as personal or up close as sword and spear play. Sure, sometimes it
can be but most of the time they're shooting from quite a distance and encased in armors. 2)
Spartan's made do with very little provision whereas our military is technologically outfitted to a
degree envied by most other modern militaries. 3) Spartans were a culture which penetrated the very
fabric of their society, whereas our military is something most of us don't think about very often
even while we're at war. 4) Spartan's would rather die than be dishonored and I think our modern
soldiers would opt for life instead of simply a glorious death. 5) Spartans primarily defended
their own region and warred with their neighbors, it's not like they went halfway across the known
world to push or defend an empire. 6) Spartan's in the Greek custom at the time took young boys as
not only proteges but lovers.
Anyway, I'm thankful and respectful to our soldiers and I'm glad the world pretty much considers
them the pinnacle of modern armed forces. However, I don't think they're Spartans. |
