It doesn't have any effect in modern landfills. Modern landfill flloors are cut to drain the
leachate into a holding area. The floors are lined with 2 to 3 feet of clay which is compacted in 6"
lifts. Then, a thick plastic liner is laid over the entire clay cap (even up the sides of the pit)
which is ironed (melted together at the seams). Every seam and patch on the liner is surveyed so the
exact location is known. Then, a protective covering of soil or tire chips is placed on top of the
liner.
The leachate seeps to the holding area and in most instances is shipped to the local water treatment
center where it is treated and dumped into the local river to be treated with the rest of the river
water at the next water treatment plant.
