Derry is considered to be the worst place on earth. It is situated in the Northern Ireland and there
are many reasons which support this statement that Derry is not such a good place. The community
that exists in Derry is also not good enough and the major problem is it is widely separated and
remote, which is the main drawback of Derry. Now since the community is not so close thus the
problem is that possibilities are very less in Derry making it a place with lack of opportunities.
All these matters are very closely related with each other and as a result of these one may find the
communication and transport system also is very poor in Derry. Since the means of transport and
communication is poor thus entertainment also could not grow in Derry, thus as a whole Derry is the
worst place on earth. |

The first thing is that is in the middle of nowhere. The buses run infrequently and finish far too
early at night. The only train which takes you to Belfast takes the longest possible route and takes
an hour longer then the bus! Unless you have a car you will find yourself almost completely
trapped.
For people who are from outside Northern Ireland it is almost impossible to make new friends. The
people are very insular (probably due to the guarded way they had to be during the troubles) but
some people are just plain rude and bigoted.
There is also a complete lack of anything to do! They have one cinema (which I must point out
refused to show Brokeback Mountain because it was about gay men!) and bolwing alley which is full of
underage drinkers!
The bars are all old style smelly pubs with sticky floors and until recently were thick with
cigarette smoke - god bless the smoking ban! The few clubs that there are are full of students eager
to put their tongue down a strangers throat and get so blind drunk they can't walk!
There is no decent venue to see a live band - not that they travel to Derry anyway - and most of
the theatre is overpriced amateur dramatics.
There are only two places where you can get a decent meal and service and these are out of the city
centre. The rest of the establishments have such poor service you'd be better doing it yourself.
Once you've ordered your meal you might end up waiting us much as forty minutes for it to arrive at
your table. And you won't get an apology.
You will also find that the people who live there think its wonderful! Most have never travelled out
of the country or even own a passport. Those who do always seem to return upset by the immense
possibility the rest of the world has to offer. Not that I'm against people loving their families
but there is just a complete lack of motivation and ambition! It just makes everyone (and the city)
lazy, ignorant and uninspiring. |

Aware of the danger of dignifying this debate with a response, there are a lot of worse places than
(London)Derry. Darfur is apparently not very pleasant, parts of Kenya have a distinct image problem
too, and Somalia carries the distinct possibility of being kidnapped.
I’ve just checked the UK’s Foreign Office web site. It contains a Travel Advice Section and as
hard as I try I couldn’t find any mention of Derry anywhere. No, not even among those flagged up
for “all but essential travel to parts of”. Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran were all up there, but
not, it would, appear Northern Ireland. Of course, Northern Ireland is part of the UK and probably
wouldn’t get a mention.
Anyway, back to more important matters… which are better, Macs or PCs?
