Dam (I Have Spelt It Wrong To Get Past The Censors) Is Not A Swear Word.
I had it pulled up. How could this be considered bad language. It isn't under any stretch of the imagination.

It is such a part of our culture and our language these days that it's stupid that words like dam, bastard and hell aren't allowed to be written, when we use them everyday. In Australia, we have much worse words like s**t, f**k, and c**t on Prime Time TV.

I don't remember Sally calling Alf a f***kin C*** in the Summer Bay diner. He is though, she would have had every right to. You can say Bastard on here.

It is not everyone says it at least twice a day so why make it a swear.

saying "wow! that is DAM good!" is like the ultimate compliment as opposed to just plain old good ;-)

it is an exclamation mark, more or less.

I think the censorship here is ludicrous to begin with, there are all kinds of things that can be said on prime-time TV that are censored here. Heck, there are things you can see on kid's cartoons that are censored here.

Geez people, lighten up.

I find colourful language, well, colourful, censorship, now that's offensive.
Not that I believe this web site should be a tourettes convention mind.

Of course it isn't - I'm astounded we even have to have this debate.

Perhaps you will have to start using "darn" instead of that other iniquitous expression. I suppose that if I were living in the Victorian era, I would have been taken aback by the use of such language, but these days I tend to find the seemingly widespread inability to spell among English speakers to be more troubling.

I agree that the censors on many sites are often very restrictive. For example, last year when I submitted an entry to another site, the censors refused my post because I used the term "Nazi." I was writing about Germany during World War II, so it's a bit of a challenge not to use that term.

You're right. The language monitoring software on the site is way too strict. I have seen some completely innocent words and phrases picked up on before, causing me to change the wording of the post or have to wait for it to be approved by a moderator. And when I say completely innocent, I don't just mean mildly objectionable like the one you mentioned, I mean really completely innocent.

Dam is a cement wall built to keep the water back.

Dam is also the female mama-goat.

Dam is also that rubber well put over your mouth at the dentist's office while you are getting filling put in.

It's a word that does promote good language but instead is a sign of negativity. It has no positive signs.

It's the websites prerogative to censor. You signed up here. If you truly disagree you should go to a different site. Thing is you don't truly disagree you just wanted to throw some dirt into the face of the corporation, be a nuisance. You could have just as easily put "Is Swearing Appropriate", but you still weren't ballsy enough to say something like forandagainst won't let me FCUKing swear(fashion pun)... Promote the creativity you bolster to be the crutch you carry. Incidentally, I've had to curse on a few of these message boards to get my point across or to convey the appropriate mood, and what's always happened is they ask me if it falls within certain guidelines. Like it or not, rampant cursing is the result in laxed lingual discipline. Appreciate what you have. Also, limiting cursing gives cursing more emphatic meaning as opposed to uninhibited or casual cursing where it becomes a coarse auxiliary that ultimately makes you sound relatively ignorant.

Sorry Balders, but did you consider Jean Claude van Damme. That's a swear word in my book.
