Churchill Was As Bad As Hitler
A new book came out last week with the argument that Churchill (voted best Britain) was as bad as Hitler. What do you think?

There's no doubt that Churchill was a hard-hearted butcher who, in his way, was as coldly callous as Hitler was, and shared the same grand racist contempt for inferior races. Churchill said he felt no pity for the aborigines of America and Australasia who, according to him, deserved to have their land stolen from them by superior white people.

Like Hitler, Churchill favoured sterilisation of the Untermenschen and proposed a mass sterilisation program of 100,000 people in 1910 so they these supposed mental defectives and undesirables would be unable to pollute the British gene pool with their sub-normal DNA. He also supported the idea of herding these unfortunates into forced labour camps.

In the 1920s, Churchill sanctioned the use of chemical weapons dropped from the air on "recalcitrant Arabs" in Iraq. He also authorised military action against the fledgling Soviet Union. Atrocities were committed against Soviet forces. In the end, the regime remained intact, but was now deeply embittered against the West and highly suspicious of it. Churchill's intervention set the scene for Stalin's paranoia. Any chance of reasonable cooperation with the Soviet Union was permanently damaged.

At a late stage of the Second World War, he urged the military to use poison gas on the German population, or any other hideously unpleasant weapons they could think of, which Britain had hitherto refrained from using. He sanctioned mass fire bombing raids which needlessly inflicted huge civilian casualties.

Churchill's closeness to fascism is demonstated by his attitude to Mussolini. Believe it or not, Churchill wrote a fan letter to Mussolini in the 1920s, expressing admiration for him. Even after the Second World War had broken out, Churchill still said Mussolini was "a very great man". He also favoured the appeasement of Mussolini in the 1930s, in contrast to his public image as the anti-appeaser.

Churchill was a warmongering fool whose overall effect on history has probably been more disastrous than that of Adolf Hitler. Churchill played a shaping role in three worlds wars (counting the Cold War as a world war) which, collectively, scarred the face of the 20th century. Without Churchill, there is no telling how peaceful the 20th century might have been.

I question almost every fact in there, and the context of many. In the 1920's Mussolini was seen by many to be a good thing for Italy, it was only after he broke international laws that this changed. Even so Churchill was probably referring to his political ability or something.

Churchill was not warmongering, he at no point tried to encourage war, but merely prepare the country for it. The alternative was Chamberlain's approach, which didn't work.

Churchill did not as far as I know suggest the use of gas, I have studied WW2 for years and found no mention of this. As for the Soviet Union, most of the west attacked it in it's infancy, they had good reason to do so, it was an extremist country which threatened them (the cold war would prove this).

I don't know what you mean by "bad" so I'll just take your claim to mean that they were equal at something.

Churchill was as bad a speaker as Hitler...not quite but he was still awesome.

Churchill was as bad a motivator as Hitler. I believe he motivated the country to enter the war. Pretty bad.

Churchill was as bad a leader as Hitler. Well he helped defeat Hitler so he might even have been badder.

I have no idea what the book talks about or what it means by "bad" so w/e.

Winston Churchill was a great man and a noble leader.
Wise too.

Not in the same class or planet as that nasty evil Hitler:Jew-killer.

Was Dresden actually necessary, or revenge? Personally I think had we lost the war Churchill and others would have been hauled up on war crimes for the bombing of Dresden, Fire-bombing of Tokyo and nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

However, this doesn't make Churchill as bad as Hitler. Churchill did little to start the war compared to Hitler, who repeatedly invaded other countries ('annexed if you prefer) and broke treaties. Churchill also never targeted the murder of political and religious opponents in occupied territories. There is no comparison to the Nazi Einsgruppen who went into the USSR to kill Communists and Jews.

A huge irony here is that Hitler's rejection by a famous art school eventually led to world war and the Holocaust. But when Churchill retired, he became a well-regarded painter.

Are you going to give some backing to these nonsensical claims.

Though Churchill bombed Dresden and other things like that, that was necessities of war. Hitler killed based on religion. Hitler will always be the yardstick by which all others are compared when it comes to evil.

Churchill did not kill six millions people, Hitler did.
