Chuck Hagel Would Be A Bad Veep Choice For Obama
This possibility is being talked up, especially by Chis Matthews, who seems to harp on it. But I think it would be a mistake.

Despite his seeming reasonableness on some issues, particularly the war, Chuck Hagel is a conservative Republican with a record of taking standard right-wing positions in most votes. His presence on the ticket will alienate lefties who might be tempted to vote Green or abstain instead of voting for Obama.

Hagel is also a personal friend of McCain. Traditionally, in presidential campaigns, the veep candidate plays the attack dog, going after the opposition, while the presidential candidate remains aloof and pretends to be noble. It's hard to see how Hagel could fill that role. He doesn't seem much like an attack dog at the best of time and will surely be even less of one when confronting his personal friend.

Hagel is also compromised by his involvement with election theft. The last two elections have been stolen by the republicans, the 2004 election, in particular, through the use of electronic voting machines. Chuck Hagel was once chief exec of one of the companies, ESS & S, which made these voting machines. Prior to his resigning his position with the company, his machines were deployed in Nebrasks. He then ran for the Senate there and, amazingly, won!

You could say, from Obama's point of view, that it's better to have people like that inside the tent, but I think it's better to clean up politics altogether.

It does not seem to make sense for Obama to choose Hagel. Although Hagel has been critical of George Bush and his administration and while he is a Republican senator, choosing him as a running mate would bring in few extra votes for Obama. Diehard Republicans are not going to vote for Obama, even if Hagel is on the ticket, because the Illinois senator is seen as too far to the left. Obama is already popular among Independent voters, and those who are left-leaning don't really need Hagel to convince them not to vote for McCain. Additionally, the growing number of Republicans who are now telling pollsters that they are now Independent will probably still cast their ballot for McCain, regardless of who Obama ends up choosing. Obama might even damage his campaign by running with Hagel, as it might convince leftists in his party to vote for Ralph Nader.

It does not really matter all that much who Obama ends up choosing as his running mate, as he is doing quite well in the polls and the race is now clearly his to lose. It is far more important for McCain to choose wisely. I would suggest that his best shot at the presidency is to convince Condi Rice to be his running mate. This would eat away at Obama's lead very rapidly.

I would love Condi, but I don't think that is in the cards.

In the end it doesn't matter. Obama's an empty shell and when the debates start he's gonna need all the help he can get from the media just to look legit. Chuck Hagel, SanFran Nan, Hairy Reed, Jesse Hi-Jackson, it doesn't matter. Christ himself won't be able to get Obama elected.
