The modern concept of Christmas is to make money off suckers that actually believe that Dec. 25th
was the birthday of Christ.
A summary of the debate on the dates of Christ's birth appears in The Oxford Dictionary of the
Christian Church: "Though speculation as to the time of year of Christ's birth dates from the early
3rd century, Clement of Alexandria suggesting the 20th of May, the celebration of the anniversary
does not appear to have been general till the later 4th century. The earliest mention of the
observance on Dec. 25th is in the Philocalian Calendar, representing Roman practice of the year 336.
This date was probably chosen to oppose the feast of the Natalis Solis Invicti [nativity of the
unconquerable sun] by the celebration of the birth of the 'Sun of Righteousness' and its observance
in the West, seems to have spread from Rome" (1983 edition, Oxford University Press, New York, 1983,
p. 280, "Christmas"). |

With what everyone has turned xmas into, how could you not? |

I guess it could be for some people. But not everyone is christian and a lot of of them still
celebrate xmas. The religion doesn't matter, agreeing with Specter87. |

Depends on what you mean by modern. Never have I celebrated Christmas with a reference to
Christianity. When I was a child it was about presents, santa, and star wars on TV. In my teenage
years it was an excuse to get drunk and party, and presents. Now it is presents (a constant theme),
and family. Soon it will all be about children again. Jesus barely gets a look in I am afraid and
I think that goes for the majority in the UK. |

Sort of. Sadly, many Christians/"Christians" don't mind the pagan stuff in xmas, as if it's okay
with God. And a lot of us know it wasn't when he was born. |

The overwhelming majority of people celebrate a purely secular Christmas with Santa Claus, Christmas
trees and presents. Some *ALSO* celebrate religious aspects of some form or another, there are
several religious observations at the same time of year, but that's not what the majority do.
However Christmas may have started (and it was a pagan celebration that early Christians stole),
today it is a secular holiday. |

Christmas may have been the initial reasoning for the holiday, but I believe it as evolved into a
family holiday. |

It was, it is now some kind of mad festival of oppulence. Your kids are thinking of Santa and what
they can get, far from any kind of Christian ideal or Christian message. Christianity has been sold
as a holiday we all buy into, Jesus would be turning in his grave, if he had one....It's a feel good
factor, an event on the calender, and these days, has nothing really related to Christianity. |
