"Meat" most commonly matches Homestar's definition -- anything in the animal kingdom. There are
exceptions though because some say fish or shellfish are not meat (which I disagree with, it's
simply meat living in the water), and some say eggs are not (which again I disagree with, it's
protein which would grow to be walking meat if we hadn't interfered), and some say nuts or mincemeat
ARE meat (which I disagree with, a nuts a nut to me).
Clearly chicken to me is meat because a) it's a walking member of the animal kingdom, b) color of
meat is irrelevant to the meat classification, after all we have "white meat" and "darkmeat" chicken
parts, we have pork sometimes called the "other white meat", etc, c) vegans refuse to eat chicken
and that's a pretty good strict operational criteria of whether something is meat -- will a vegan
object to it?, d) if chicken is not meat then what is it? And don't just say "chicken" because we
can turn that around on red meat too and say hey "beef" isn't meat instead it's simply "beef".
PS, by the way how funny is it that For and Against wouldn't let me spell out darkmeat with a space
imbetween because it might be offensive? |
