Bush Is The Worst President In American History
Bush has inflicted catastrophic damage on America. He has run up unmanageable budget deficits, destroyed America's good name around the world, defiled the constitution, and violated almost every principle that the country was founded on. If you could quantify the damage that Bush has done, it would amount to more than that done by all of America's enemies through all of its previous history added together. Bush thinks history will be kind to him. I say it will revile him. He will be regarded as one of the most catastrophically inept leaders of all time.

If George Putz were a democrat, he would have been assassinated by now. But since it's only the rightwing that murders leaders, not the moderates, it's no surprise that Putz was never in any danger.

Well he isn’t my favorite that’s for sure. But you know what they say; you get the president you deserve. He is the lamest of lame duck presidents. But we have been pretty much a lame duck constituency. We have completely failed to hold a president responsible for their actions since Ronald Reagan.

In the year 2000, we stood as the world's sole superpower, with a booming economy, a huge federal surplus, fairly good standing internationally, and we were at peace.

A great leader would have taken that position and parlayed it into becoming the global leader in all areas, using the USA's success to illustrate to the world the power of democracy and of freedom. Said leader would have spread food, peace, and knowledge around the globe, elevating the status of potentially every human being on Earth, and assuring a leadership role for the USA throughout the 21st Century. In other words, we could have spread our peace and prosperity through great swaths of the world.

Even more so after 9/11: The world stood behind us in those weeks. "Today We Are All Americans" read the headlines in France. What a platform to lead from!

But that is not where we ended up, is it? Instead of a Pax Americana we have exported a disastrous war to the cradle of civilization (of which the Founding Fathers hoped the United States would represent the pinnacle). We have wrecked our economy financing this, and have become the least trusted nation in the world.

Meanwhile at home we have lost some of our basic civil rights, we literally trail the field of western nations in simple human statistics such as literacy and mothers dying in childbirth, public education is a joke, public health is a joke, and our mortgage system is in crisis. Oh, and Katrina response is being botched to this very day, and Bush stood by his team members who OUTED AN AMERICAN SECRET AGENT. If you did that, you would be charged with treason.

Oh, and by virtue of our troops in Afghanistan (justly) and in Iraq (unjustly), we stand absolutely unprepared to actually DEFEND the nation should something erupt a lot closer to home... If the Venezuela/Colombia near miss a few weeks back didn't scare you, it very much should have.

This is a disaster of a presidency. If any other was worse, someone is going to have to prove it to me.

I agree, but I think your being too harsh. Bush has been the only President who has had to deal with a major terrorist strike within our borders. 9/11 changed everything forever- there's no going back to any kind of fairy tale life where stuff like that can't happen here.

While I have many doubts about his true intentions about going to war with Iraq, you cannot deny that Bush acted swiftly and unwaveringly in the days and weeks after 9/11 to seek out those responsible. And yes, Bush changed the way the world thinks about America, but that would have happened no matter who was in office.

I'm mainly voting yes here because on the domestic side of the issues Bush stinks. Any good Clinton might have achieved Bush has washed away.

Is he the worst President in history? If not, he's pretty close but he will always get a little leeway with me because of 9/11.

Absolutely the worst hands down. At no other time in history has the U.S. Had so much of the world behind it as it did after 9/11. It was bush policy that destroyed the empathy and sympathy of the world. Any other president in history if given the same sequence of events would have done far better than this administration.

He doesn't seem too fit for the position does he? It makes me smile a bit every time I think of it.

Most people go on tangents how horrible of a person he is, but don't take the time to understand his personal side. I believe he may be a good person, but he is definitely not worthy of being a countries leader.

Bush is easily one of the worst presidents that United States has ever had. Firstly, he can't speak publicly, he is continually batching his speeches. Secondly, the economy is in absolutely terrible condition. The war that has been being fought since about the beginning of his presidency has devastated the economy. This is not a complaint against the war, that's a different debate. Finally, he does very little work to keep any of his campaign promises and goals. Both republicans and democrats are waiting for the day that Bush is finally out of office.

Absolutely true. And so sad for America that he has done so much to destroy the best of America.

He ranks lower than Rutherford B. Hayes who must be smiling in his grave because that too was his legacy.

I hope countries of the free world will forgive America for letting him and his daddy steal 2 elections here.

He is definitely one of the worst because he lied to the world (Weapons of mass destruction) and said "God bless America" while making the U.S. Of America cursed by more people than ever (I think).

The problem in the US is people like you who dwell on stupid things that happened a really long time ago, and that probably aren't even true. Intelligence reports said that there were WMDs in Iraq! You forgot to mention that.

I actually do not think that George W. Bush was the worst president in American history. His dad was worse. I would rank George W. Bush as next to the worst. Both Bushes did absolutely nothing for the US. The economy is at its worst, there are no jobs, there is no help for those who need it, everything in America today is failing. For example, look at Education and how much it cost to go to college today. George Bush has done nothing to stop the raising tuition costs. Less people are getting educated today. Look at No Child Left Behind. Although it was a good idea in the beginning, it failed because the expectations are set too high and it does not consider all children as individuals. Schools lose funding and programs now when they do not pass the tests under NCLB. Schools are closed down. The tests are too hard. As a result, the drop out rate has increased dramatically. George Bush has destroyed America. Hopefully, America will get someone in office that clean up his disastrous mess.

Yes, Bush is by far the worst. As someone else said, when the circumstances of his "victory" were so dubious, I too had a presentiment that his presidency might turn out to be especially significant.

I feel that he set America on a path to inevitable decline. There can be no complete recovery from the processes Bush has set in motion. The antagonism generated has been too great. Bush deluded himself into thinking that America was powerful because it was rich or had a strong military. He failed to realise that these were only minor components of its power. Its real power lay in its influence, influence that derived, ultimately, from respect felt by the people of other countries. With that respect gone, America is on the way to becoming an ex-superpower. It will take a while to play out but the process is inevitable now.

Helen Thomas, the veteran White House correspondent, has seen many presidents come and go over the decades. Her verdict is unambiguous : Bush is the worst.

America's power was always based on economics and military strength. How other countries view the US and the notion of "soft power" is of secondary importance. Britain is a perfect example of this. Once a mighty empire, Britain's power rested entirely on its trade dominance (through its control of colonies) and its naval strength. Britain, now a former world power and an extremely pale shadow of its former self, is still generally respected around the world for its tradition of liberalism, but this was never enough to sustain its position as a world power. The status of countries boils down to their economic and military health. Arguably, the US now has neither.

One more thought about the US and the anger that Bush has provoked around the world with the Iraq war. Vietnam provoked European protest and outrage in the 1960s and 1970s, yet this did not dent America's global power at all.
