I'm an avid biker for practical daily life. I've hauled kids to daycare, grocery shopping, and commuted to/from work (20 miles round trip) a day for most of a year. In fact from 1990 to December 2015 I got around metro Boston without owning any car at all. That's a very long time.

And then I had my second infant, had to get them both to a day care too far to ride to, and became a full time driver.

Here's what I've learned.

1) Biking is superior AS LONG AS your available time, distance, load to transport, and weather all cooperate. But if any one of those factors doesn't align then biking is inferior.

2) Many more people could use bikes many more ways than they currently do if they want to, but likewise, many people who driver literally have no good alternative to driving.

3) I've seen BOTH drivers and bicyclists do some horrible and stupid things, and to be honest with you, after I'd learned my bike route well and knew how to be safe, my biggest problem wasn't the drivers, it was other bicyclists who were careless and selfish and quite frankly rude if anyone or anything was in the way on the path they felt personally entitled to (walkers, joggers, bikers, animals, whatever).

4) After you succeed in getting everyone to bike you'll discover many of the same problems you see with cars. Traffic jams (of bikes), parking slots full or parking where it's not supposed to be, unsafe vehicles on the road, accidents, etc.

I could write more. But basically bikes are superior to cars SOMETIMES, but not all the time, and not even most of the time. Quite frankly people don't just drive out of laziness or entitlement. The vast majority driving already determined that is is the most practical way if not the only way for them to do what has to get done.
