I was inclined to vote on the other side until I read beyond the title of the debate. I do not
agree that, just because the media, finds someone to be beautiful the ideal person is the opposite
of that person. While there are generalizations in the media, there are also people who are truly
beautiful and to say that, because the media or Hollywood finds them to be beautiful strips them of
that beauty is unfair. I find Matt Damon to be very good looking. He is viewed as good looking by
the media as well. This does not mean that the ideal guy looks nothing like him and it does not
mean that one has to look like him to be good looking.
People find various traits to be attractive. On first meeting, if there is no physical attraction,
most people do not go on to develop a romantic relationship. On the flip side, if one is in a
relationship and the physical attraction is the only thing there, it will not last long. Beauty
fades. We age. What is on the inside is important. It isn't the only important thing. People who
say that are lying. I have heard many people say that it only inner beauty that matters, but when
they are out and trying to meet a romantic partner, what is it that draws them to the individual in
the first place? One does not know what is on the "inside" when looking at a group of people. I am
not shallow and I have dated men that, to some, are not attractive. I have also dated men that are
attractive to many and I have ended up looking at them and seeing someone unattractive after getting
to know them.
Whether we want to be honest with ourselves or not, we are all drawn to someone that we find to be
attractive. This does not make up mean, shallow or unkind. It makes us human. There are studies
done in this regard. It is unfortunate, perhaps, but even as very small children, we are drawn to
beauty. Of course, everyone finds different looks to be appealing, hence "there is a lid for every
pot"...as my mother always told me.
As far as the title of this debate, I agree. If the explanation were worded differently, I would
have posted on the other side. I do not think we can strip the beauty from someone because their
beauty meets the industry's standard of beauty. I also do not think that we can say someone who is
different from that standard cannot be called beautiful. |
