Bad News For Obama: The "Independent" Vote Will Not Decide The Election In 2008.
After announcing that Biden (hyper-lefty) is going to be his running mate in 2008, Obama essentially conceded that this election is going to be about exciting the Democratic voter base. Either they've determined that the "Independent" vote is split, or they anticipate record low voter turn out. I'm also now hearing rumblings of a McCain/Romney ticket. Obama moves left, McCain goes right. It is ALL about exciting the voter base. It has to be because Independents likely agree that neither of these two are worthy of being the next President.

While I agree that the Independent Voter went down (with Ron Paul), it seems to me that Obama is trying to move to the middle/right, not to the left.

I think he may even be in danger of alienating his base while gaining nothing, since the right will never trust a "secret Muslim" anyways!

I agree that Obama's rhetoric has been rather centric lately. Dishonestly centric, but there nonetheless. He is afterall the most liberal senator in the senate. Biden is right behind him, only more outspoken.

This is a very leftist ticket. So left, that they are doing more to rally Republicans to get out and vote that McCain is.

The latest poll shows the independent vote as split so that "split" part of your theory may be correct. However, choosing Biden does not in any stretch mean Independent voters would be alienated. This election is very much about rejecting Bush, Conservative Republicans, and the mistakes of the last several elections, and I think those factors motivate Independent voters more than VP choice. Obama will easily get his share of the Independent vote just for that reason.

By the way, we spar over McCain and Obama a lot. I will say though that out of all the Republicans I think McCain is a respectable choice. Frankly he should have beaten Bush some years back. I don't doubt McCain served his country with distinction, and he has at times been an independent voice among the Republicans. But, I still think he will continue where Bush left off with only minor deviations.

In terms of your VP suggestions for Republicans I think Romney is a bad choice. I'm in Massachusetts and I'm telling you the claims that he was a good governor who turned this state around are false and will get blown away under intensive review. You'd be better off with Lieberman who frankly is more qualified, better experienced, and has proven he can think for himself.
