Appearance Is What Determines How Jokes Are Received
I think that it's what a person looks like that determines how jokes are received by others.

A Jew making Jew jokes is funnier than a, say, Protestant.

 That's because Jews wrote all the best Jew jokes. Protestants don't write jokes. If they could take a joke then they would still be Catholics.

I wouldn't always agree. Gone are the days of Jimmy cricket wearing his wellies on the wrong feet to create a laugh. I maybe missing the point here. The substance of the joke is more important than the appearance of the joke teller.

Not many of the great comedians need to look silly to be funny.

I don't know... I've read a lot of jokes, and they're still funny even though It all looks like words.

 Look at the cover of the book is it funny looking? Look at the font of the lettering, is it different? Look at the layout of the book, there is a lot of white space isn't there? Also your presenting the joke to yourself in this situation and it sounds like your doing a good job. Half of being funny is making yourself laugh. Balance is referring to one person telling a joke to another.

 If you make a joke about christanity for instance, aren't you to find it far more funny if it's a christian priest making the joke than a satanic person?
