Animal testing is something i like to call the two s's which stands for:
Sad
Sick
animal testing should be illegal because they are putting helpless animals in pain and i think that
is just horrid. |

Actually, it's something I don't even want to talk about it's so terrible. Animal testing isn't
just a cruel project for cosmetics and other stuff, it's something the animal themselves have no
control of because they can't just stand up and say, "hey stop putting lipstick on me," it's really
stupid, if people want to test their products, why don't they go do it on a stupid rock? |

You know what? I hope you are very young and this is your "cause" of the moment. My life is
enriched greatly by animals. I love my pets. I rescue animals in need and find them homes. I do
not, by any means feel that animals should be needlessly abused, however, we as human beings need to
do research to help other human beings. Much as I love animals and, believe me, I think most
animals are better than many people, I do not think science should halt so that bleeding hearts
don't have to face the fact that human life is paramount. I personally want to see more cures to
diseases that kill human beings. I don't want to see children dying of childhood cancers. I didn't
want to watch my father pass away. I would give a million animal lives to find a way to prevent
anything ever happening to either of my children. It should be done humanely, but research needs to
be conducted in order to improve the human condition. Also, not sure where you get the notion about
cosmetic testing, but many companies do not conduct testing on animals any longer. Many of the
ingredients in cosmetics have been tested, are deemed safe and used in most modern cosmetics. I
don't like the fact that any animal has to suffer. I really hate the fact that human beings have to
suffer from disease and exposure to toxins that could be prevented with more, not less testing. We
have to put things in perspective. I work in the medical field and see enough people suffering.
How many animals have you witnessed suffering in lab experiments? I bet not a lot. I know this
because, unless you work in a lab, you don't have access to see the things that go on. Sometimes,
ignorance is bliss. As long as human life can be made better, we will need to continue to use
animals for testing. I hope you don't find it acceptable for human beings to suffer so that animals
can have better lives. Also, do you eat meat, wear leather, drink milk, eat eggs, visit zoos or
circuses? There are so many inhumane things done to animals that it makes me ill sometimes. It is
one thing to care about animals and do something about it as I do. It is totally irresponsible to
put animal life about human life ever. |

Better to test it on animals than humans. |

Actually a significant portion of the animal testing that takes place is for the purpose of
veterinary medicine, and so is in fact for the benefit of animals. Additionally much of veterinary
medical advances come from testing originally intended to benefit humans. By hook or by crook many
animals live longer healthier lives due to the suffering of their brethren. As an animal myself,
I’m comfortable with that. |

This has been on the site in various forms and countless times and I've written more thorough
replies in the past, but here goes now...
1) Animal testing for medicine IS justified, it can save countless lives and promote scientific
advancements, and in fact some animal testing is indeed related to prevention and treatment of
diseases in animals themselves - particular for agriculture. Research requires careful protocols
and is carefully reviewed and monitored by institutional and governmental review boards. 2) Animal
testing for makeup is NOT justified simply because makeup is vanity. However, animal testing for
safety of a specific chemical (even if one use of that chemical is in makeup) IS justified because
it isn't being done just for vanity and the chemical may end up used outside of makeup. 3) Food:
Domesticated food animals are justified so long as they are raised and kill humanely and processed
within health standards. Wild animal hunting is justified so long as the herd populations need
culled and the licenses for the hunting are well controlled. Exotic animal hunting for food should
be banned. 4) Fur and Leather - If the fur or leather come from an animal already domesticated for
the sake of food then using the fur and leather is simply an efficient and full utilization of the
animal so none is wasted. Raising fluffy animals solely for the purpose of fur, or snakeskin belts,
or whatever, is wrong and should be banned. |

I'm going to be lazy and copy and paste from a previous post of mine on this issue.
The development of artificial arteries, the possibility
of reversing spinal cord injury, and the ageing process are all being investigated using animal
models. The best hopes to cure malaria, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, epilepsy, clinical
obesity, infertility and a variety of birth defects all rely on current animal experiments.
If there were good alternatives to animals that worked better or as well, for less money and hassle,
scientists would use them.
Animal welfare is not the aim of animal experiments,
human welfare is. It is right and proper that animals be sacrificed for the cause of humanity. If
all animal experimentation were stopped the slowdown would be real and the cost would be high.
Malaria kills 2.7 million people every year, over five people every minute, most of them children
under the age of five. A delay in developing a vaccine by just one month would kill 225,000
people.
Are you really so fed up with humanity that you would sacrifice us and our children to save the
monkeys? |
