America Needs To Reinstate The Draft
Our country needs return to the firm tradition of drafting soldiers from the general population. Otherwise the population, who elect our leaders, becomes entirely too comfortable with the idea of going to war because most Americans don't risk being sent to war. And war should be an undesirable choice.

As much as the idea scares me, I must support this motion. The draft was a great equalizer in America. And if we do not impose a military draft then we should at least impose a mandatory peace corps year.

No one hates America more than its citizens. In order to replace a sense of nationalism in the American people, it is necessary to reinstate the draft, but it doesn't have to be necessarily for military service. All you policy debaters out there, remember last year's topic? People could be made to serve for several years in the Peace Corps, Learn and Serve America, AmeriCorps, etc. "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

I think if it is reinstated then the population will actually take action and try and stop the war instead of just not "caring" anymore

Yes. One of the key differences between Britain and America on one hand and the countries of continental Europe on the other is that Britain and America have all-volunteer armies while, on the continent, periods of compulsory military service are still the norm. When you have conscript armies by ordinary young men who have no particular inclination for the military life, there is much more reluctance to use them on military adventures.

When a country goes to war and takes foreign life, the pain of it should be felt by everyone. Everyone should experience fear or grief, and should be paying more taxes to fund the war. That way everyone's mind is focused and they will at least have to think about what the country they belong to is doing. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened in Bush's war. Bizarrely, taxes have been cut - I think the first time this has ever happened while America was at war. The deaths of the soldiers and the grief of their families have been carefully filtered out of what appears on television. For example, the Pentagon refuses to give permission for the return of military coffins to be photographed or filmed.

A Democratic congressman proposed a draft for exactly this reason and his idea should have been supported : Not because military conscription is a good thing in itself (it isn't) but because its existence would help bring an end to this atrocious war and would help prevent similar wars occurring in future.

America should consider this so that our country would learn to be more reticent to go to war.

No way! Not everyone wants to fight in a so called "heroic" or "glorious" battle. A lot of people want to live their own lives, follow their own paths. All the army brings is tragedy and lost lives, for both sides.

I don't see a problem with Americans standing up and fighting for America. The problems is that we are always fighting for someone else for some reason that is never truthfully told to the Americans so our people continue to die for things that are not our beliefs. And I know that a lot of OUR soldiers fight to support our Presidents beliefs but I am not one of them. I would fight for my land, I would fight for my country but I choose not to fight for OIL..

As it stands right now, Congress still has the power to draft, they have simply chosen not to do so. We already have a considerably large standing army with highly skilled soldiers. If the government starts drafting people into the military, they will be extremely "green" and might end up doing more harm than good on the battlefield.
Draftees have largely been unaccepted by the military regulars of this country, as evidenced in World War II and the Vietnam War.
I think because Congress was considering a draft a few years ago, some people have realized this reality. But for the most part, I think people are sick of war anyway and don't want to elect leaders that are willing to go to war over what the public might consider to be trivial matters.

Considering the monkey standing in as our President, the one who lied profusely to the country he represents in order to go to war, I disagree. It really goes against the conscience of some people to fight, and add to that having to question the honesty of a leader who is calling for war, and many will simply refuse. We all have choices, even about joining the military, even if there is a draft. A willing military is a stronger one.

Your argument is that because we have lousy leaders we shouldn't have a draft. I'm arguing that we need to reinstate the draft to wake the population up and force them to stop electing lousy leaders.

This country is not comfortable with the idea of going to war, if we were this Administration wouldn't have had to lie 937 times to get us there. A draft would merely offer more pawns for the powers that be to play their game of geopolitical American empiricism. If they really needed more troops they could very easily move some from the 700+ foregn bases we have.

I hear what your saying. But seeing as how we elect "the powers" into office we have no right to hide behind our "volunteer" army. What's the difference between a "volunteer army" and a mercenary army?

Rejecting a corrupt politicians war would be brave. Letting others fight in your name isn't. During the Vietnam War politicians couldn't afford to support the war without facing their entire constituency who might have been drafted. Today we have comfortable politicans who were lulled into entering a war in 2003. And they did so with little political risk. Hell, one of them is even running for president now. Talk is cheap. It's one thing to say you oppose the Iraq war. It's another to prevent the politicians who start the war from getting into office. People would be more mobilized to elect peaceful politicians if they had a real stake in whether or not the country goes to war.
