America Is Bringing Obama Down To Its Level
Bit by bit, he's making compromises, abandoning the principled stands he once took, succumbing to the prejudices of the rabid, howling mob.

Even those for whom Obama was not initially the preferred candidate cannot fail to note that he showed certain signs of character unusual in a politician. When he took off his little American flag lapel pin because he thought it was becoming associated with demagoguery, for example, I thought that was a noble gesture. When he chose to adopt the original, foreign-sounding version of his name, Barack, instead of the Americanised version, Barry, that seemed a sign of character too. He was someone who eschewed the easy option.

Recently, though, we've seen him cave in to the howling mob mentality which prevails in America. Faced with constant criticism from demagogues like Hillary Clinton, Obama opted to put his lapel pin back on. He disowned his pastor publicly even though his pastor was right in almost everything he said.

As is customary for American politicians, Obama has also abased himself in front of AIPAC, after initially venturing a more nuanced approach to Middle Eastern politics.

Even when a politician has good instincts, America coarsens and debases them down to its level. We saw this with Hillary Clinton, who I don't think ever had much character, but at least cared about the right things. When she started a senatorial career as a launching pad for her run at the presidency, she played the demagogue part for years. Now we're seeing the same tendencies in Obama. It seems the only way you can get elected in America is by appeasing the rabid mob.

...and now you see why Obama is losing. This is the type of supporter he has. America-haters. Not much "inspiration" in a message of hate.

Obama has this same view of America. All bad.

NObama would have to rise up to America. He is not worthy of the position of commander in chief. For his sake i hope he does become more like America instead of staying socialist.

They were just laughing about that on TV....."I don't think Americans are sitting at home pressed about Obama and public campaign financing".

Its a big joke....is this the best Republicans can do? They are mad because Obama won't take money from Big Business and Lobbyist groups.....Please. Give me a break.

Obama was never at a higher level than the rest of his country, and the only people who ever thought that he was were the members of his bizarre spiritual-political cult, with their childish enthusiasm and glazed-over eyes. The fact that Obama at first made a big publicity stunt about how he would use public funds to finance his presidential campaign, only to turn around and shun these funds when he realized that he could raise far more through private donations, is truly shameful. This has nothing to do with America pulling him down. It has everything to do with the fact that Obama wants to spend well over $80 million on his campaign, which would have been the limit, had he accepted public money.

Obama is just a politician; he's not the elusive saviour or immaculate saint that his followers thought he was. There's nothing wrong with being just a politician, who engages in traditional, age-old hackery. The problem is when that same politician tells his supporters that his campaign is about something bigger, better and more noble, only to find that his faithful believe this message, even though they don't have a clue as to what his rhetoric really means.

There is essentially no way that McCain will be able to beat Obama when it comes to spending during this campaign, even if he gets some help from 527's and the Republican Party. As such, he has an uphill battle on his hands, and his relative lack of finances--in comparison to Obama, who is bursting at the seams with money--will make a potential win in November on his part even more impressive. Obama is no longer the under-dog and he should stop playing this role. He's really no more than your run-of-the-mill, establishment politician, who will sell off the family silver in a heartbeat if it's seen as being politically expedient.

That isn't 'America', and he isn't being brought down. He was always going to do this. It's because of the primary system.

During the primaries he has to win the votes of the party faithful so he gave very principled promises. Now for the election he has to win the votes of everybody so he is watering everything down and so on. This happens every election with every candidate, Obama has run on a more principled ticket so you notice it more.
