It is true that most schools today nurture such relationships and keep them a secret. Both parties
stay quiet on such issues as they know that they have a lot on stake. The teacher has his/her
personal reputation, the student has his/her future and the school has its name at stake so such
cases are never brought to light. There should be strict action for such issues as teacher student
relationships have serious moral, legal and ethical repercussions. |

That's a depressing thing to imagine. Why can't we imagine that there's one amazing teacher at every
school? That's more cheerful, I think. |

No, I think it is probably very rare. The reason is that the teacher is almost certainly going to
lose his or her job if the relationship becomes public knowledge and it would be very easy for it to
do so. Indeed, the teacher would not only lose a job, but be prevented from taking similar jobs in
future, possibly subjected to public pillorying in the local media, maybe even convicted of a
criminal offence and put on a list of sex offenders. The downside is huge.
Most young people are not emotionally stable. Many teachers are already married, making a long-term
continuation of the relationship difficult or impossible. The pupil would be strongly tempted to
mention the relationship to his or her friends in a boastful way, and, if the relationship breaks
down, the pupil has no further incentive to keep the secret other than personal shame.
Indeed, if the relationship breaks down bitterly, the pupil may reveal the fact of the relationship
deliberately to hurt the teacher. Most teachers would recognise these dangers in advance and avoid
getting into a relationship in the first place because of them, even if purely moral considerations
were set aside. |

No, it wasn't entirely uncommon for a teacher to be more relaxed about their sexuality... But i
would have been shocked if anything scandalous was going on, shocked because no one would have ever
guessed, not because it was on the news, which is the difference between it being regulated and it
being wrong... |
