All US Citizens Should Be Required To Recycle
Our landfills are filled with materials that are recyclable- according to Paper Retriever, 40% of landfill volume is paper, a recyclable item. If we weren't so lazy and jus sorted out the main objects, we could be saving land for other uses- businss, pleasure, parks, schools, and more. The recycling process would be free to citizens, no money involved.

Couldn't disagree, I thought Americans were quite good in the league table at recycling.
We aught to be like the it was during WW2, and treat everything as usable. A trend I dislike is the use of plastic for almost everything. So the manufacturers have a lot to answer for.

It helps with the economy, and it helps save the land. It's important for the future, and it's really not that hard to sort through a bunch of garbage and leave it to better use than letting it take up space in a landfill.

All citizens should be required to recycle because it is true that the landfills are filling up and so many people use products that aren't biodegradable. The city I live in actually gives you a discount on your utilities if you recycle which is incentive for my city to recycle. More cities should be like this. It would make our earth a much more healthier one.

I recycle. I only buy organic foods, i only buy organic cosmetics and house cleaning products I pick up the trash and I take out the garbage every single day.

I do my fair share.
And I treat the earth with respect.

Required by law - no. Required by the disposal companies then yes. We don't even fine people for littering in the US - I can't see us finding the resources for a recycling police, the regular police can't handle their own jobs because crime rates are so bad.

We live in the country and are allowed to burn trash. The problem with that is that some people are too ignorant to know what NOT to burn because some materials pollute the air worse than they do the landfills. We use a weekly dumpster service and only burn papers from my office. We don't burn magazines and some sales papers because of the inks that are toxic while burning.

Right now we have a huge pile of tires that were on the land when we purchased it. We have been trying to get rid of them for years but the agencies who handle this type of disposal charge per tire after the first two. So each year we get rid of about 8 tires. I notice all these playgrounds that have chipped up tires under the swings and other playsets and so I thought I would find a company that made this for playgrounds and they would take the tires from us - NOPE! They won't take them from a family, only from a business that uses the tires. It's stupid rules like that that are destroying this country. Very often it is the environmentalist who CAUSE the problems in the first place by creating these stupid rules or laws that prohibit the government from doing what is right for humanity. What is right for the earth is what usually gets tangled up in a mass of paperwork and laws and remains dormant until a bigger problem arises...when it's too late - THAT is when the US government decides to take action - long after when they should have.

Definitely, yes.
We all do it in Europe, otherwise we get FINED
so you Americans get it off lightly, believe me.
In Germany, people get PAYED TO RECYCLE.
How cool is that =)

RECYCLING should be something everyone should do. Not only paper but other materials as well. We now have the technology to free landfills completely- concrete, metal, glass, and convert these worthless pieces of junk into natural gas. Why don't we use this technology- ask the government.

I may be wrong, but don't they burn the trash in order to produce the energy? And burning it would only cause pollution...

I agree, this should help boost up the economy, we waste so much stuff and
it is so hard to dispose of certain items
that it seems costly.

Exactly! Then our planet will become healthier. We could stop the loss of some items too.

Yes, yes, yes The USA has so many landfills today I may not have facts on this but a small percentage of it may be aluminum products even though we have the power and energy to recycle them and that I can't stand.

Recycling means using an article or a substance till the extent it is a usable and after that turning it into a resource for manufacturing another product. This generates a huge raw material without any cost for various industries. Recycling aims at saving resources for the future generations. The commonly recycled materials are paper, metal, glass and plastic. Moreover this can reduce litters increasing the neatness of the parks, roads and other public places. It prevents the emission of harmful greenhouse gases and reduces water pollution. Energy conservation is another motto of reclycling. It can cut down the requirement of new landfills. Recycling, as an industry, can be helpful to reduce the socio-economic problem significantly by creating huge job vacancies. In United States people are becoming aware of the benefits of recycling.Hence laws are passed and the process is made free for citizens to increase the awareness.

It would be a good idea, just making it work is the only issue. However, if we could find a way to get people to abide by it, I'm totally for it.

Yes, There isn't a downfall towards it, It helps every way possible so it should be done. Everyone talks about it but never does it, if it is law then it will solve everyone's problems

There is no good reason not to do this. If the recycling service is integrated with the rubbish collection service, it simply requires just a little more effort on the part of each householder to separate rubbish into a few different categories at the time of disposal. Many countries have already done this for quite some time and, frankly, any country that isn't doing this by now is just being selfish and irresponsible.

All US citizens and citizens from all other countries in the world should be required to recycle. Recycling is very important for the future of our planet. It is not hard to separate your trash and recycle items that can be recycled. It is something that will save money, time, and effort and in the long run could possible end up saving our Earth. Many areas in the US already require it. However, it should be made into a global law that everyone recycles paper, plastic, aluminum, and more. Recycling is a very mature and responsible thing to do for your community and for your planet.

In many countries, households are requried to recycle now. It's a good thing as long as it does not go extreme (i.e. In Japan, household wastes are required to divide into more than 20 kinds to recycle, which becomes quite a burden).

Requiring citizens to recycle is not a fanciful notion at all. In fact, most major municipalities in Canada have required that residents sort through their garbage and recycle papers, boxes, jars and bottles for well over a decade. Residents are provided with a green or blue coloured box (depending on their borough or municipality) and a recycling truck comes by once or twice a week to collect this material.

In these municipalities, residents are normally required by law to recycle. Placing recyclable material in their garbage is considered to be an offence and may incur a fine. In some cases, inspectors do walk the streets and they may check this, but it remains quite rare. The majority of residents have become perfectly accustomed to recycling and are not inconvenienced by this at all.

I am FOR creating a new arm of law enforcement, Green Ops, whose mission is to search through all tax payers trash cans in search of recyclable material. If any is found, all property, including children, of those responsible will be seized and auctioned off. The revenues created will be used to support a media campaign aimed at increasing the mandate of the Green Ops.

Communism alert!

Of course we shouldn't be required to recycle. That takes away one of our most basic freedoms, the freedom to throw things away. As long as there's a garbage truck coming around once a week, I'm going to put whatever I want in it.

And what do you mean we could be "saving land for other uses"? Have you seen how much unused land there is in the U.S.? Take a look at Wyoming some time. There's nothing there.

No, they should be required to kill themselves (humanely if necessary) and then we can all use their corpses as biomulch. Cos they all so fat this would at a stroke stop population overcrowding, corporate control and slow global warming. Not to mention a high reduction in diabetes and obesity
