| All Students Should Play A Musical Instrument |
| I believe that if you play a musical instrument it can help you learn something new for example: If you play the flute, in swimming, you can hold your breath longer, and if you play an instrument which is related to your favourite type of music like rock music-guitar or drums. See what i mean? |

They should. I wouldn't mandate it, but it should be encouraged. Music is a wonderful thing. Of
course, if it doesn't do anything for the student, they should stop. But they should at least try. |

Why should we have to if we don't want to? |

No. Playing a musical instrument isn't for everyone. I play a few myself and love it, but I have a
brother who would have a really hard time with it and it would only frustrate him and make him angry
if he had to. |

I don't agree with this concept at all. Yes i do play a musical instrument but that is purely out of
choice. Other than increasing my self confidence it has been of no other help to my other aspects of
school and home life!! I don't believe everyone should play an instrument because firstly, everyone
should have a choice in the matter and secondly, not everyone is musically talented. Some people get
it, some people fight but eventually get it and others just can't get the hang of it. Quite
honestly, why should we encourage the youth of today to pick up an instrument when statistics show
that some of them are leaving school at 16 not being able to read or write? Now that is a serious
problem and one which won't be solved and may even be increased by us encouraging them to pick up an
instrument. |

Legitimate reason in the subtext, and I'd like to agree, but see, there's also this one issue we
call "natural talent". (And of course the things others have mentioned, which I won't bother to
restate.) |

All instruments other than percussion and strings require a lot of breath support, not only flute.
Also, instruments require a lot of time and dedication to do well, no one likes those kids who are
only in band or choir because they have to be. I see that it can be a good thing, but it shouldn't
be required. |

I agree with keepmindok, the students need a framework and discipline but we can't make every
scenario a requirement. Imagining a world where everyone plays an instrument is fun but you could
say the same thing about everyone knowing how to act or make art or speak extra languages or play
football. Furthermore there are some people genuinely terrible at playing instruments no matter how
hard they try. And there are handicaps which might interfere. And it's possible either their
religious belief or the will of their parents might interfere. |

I disagree, for the same reason they should not all take take a foreign language. As long as they
are given a framework routine discipline and encouragement. |
