I agree cuz that is wrong for people of that country to learn the other people's language cuz they
wont learn that country's. If you want to be part of a country you need to speak that language. |

I totally agree with you, but here in the US most Americans feel the same way. Even though it makes
sense, if we don't print stuff in 3, 4, or 5 languages people complain and the politicians just suck
up..... It costs a fortune to cater to foreigners that don't learn the
language, not to mention that it hurts our school system. The schools have a "no child left behind"
rule, so no one is allowed to get too far ahead, What do you think that does for the truly bright
students? When my grand parents came from Europe, the teachers said "we wont teach your kids unless
they learn English or American." We learned American... Nowadays the liberals are just nuts and
ruining this country. Liberalism is necessary for growth, but it has to be mixed with common sense
or conservatism. |

There are plenty of Welsh people who like speaking Welsh, and they're still British citizens.
Learning English shouldn't be forced upon them. |

No, you should not have to speak English to become a British citizen. Immigrants who wish to
eventually find employment in the UK and those who would like to climb the social ladder, will find
that it is in their best interest that they learn how to communicate in English. The government,
however, should not force immigrants when it comes to learning a new language. In some cases, you
may have a recent immigrant who sponsors the application of an elderly mother, for example, and in
such a case it would not make sense for the UK to force her to learn English.
There are ways to encourage immigrants to learn English once they are in Britain. For example, the
UK could offer to pay newcomers who enroll in government approved language courses a small stipend
as a reward for learning English. This method is used in Canada, where many immigrants are offered
relatively modest amounts of money in exchange for taking English and French courses.
I do not think that most immigrants will ever see themselves as English. Instead, they will identify
themselves as simply British. |
