Recently I was shopping for some makeup online and after googling some of the brands I like to
compare them, I came across some articles that proclaimed the dangers of many of our common personal
care, bath and beauty, oral care and deodorant (just to name the first ones that come to mind)
brands. I've never been all that interested in organic everything...seemed a bit silly, but the
truth is that many ingredients in those products are absorbed into our bloodstream via mucus
membranes and by penetrating our skin. Makes sense....think of the nicotine patch and other
medications that can be applied directly to the skin as a dosing method. Our skin is our largest
organ and we cover it with soaps, cleansers, lotions, shampoo, conditioner (they not only come in
contact with our scalps, but our bodies as we rinse) and many other products that are supposedly
created for the health of our skin. Even most of the natural products are not actually natural.
Seems the only way to guarantee that something is a natural product is to go with something that is
certified as organic and products with clear labeling with words that we actually know instead of a
host of chemicals. Even mineral oil (found in baby oil, so one would think that would be safe) is
not good for our skin. Babies are exposed to many toxins as we bathe them and care for their skin.
This is partially the reason for the early onset of puberty, especially in girls. Yet, with them
developing at a much younger age, they are not getting their periods until about 12 or
13....normally, we begin to menstruate after we develop breast buds and hair begins to grow under
our arms and on our genitalia. Not so these days.
I don't think anyone needs to become alarmist in nature over this. Obviously this is not a new
threat. We can and should, however, take a more proactive stance as consumers. Many of the
products that are rated as a zero threat are less expensive than the brands we are used to
purchasing and they are much more effective because care is taken to preserve freshness without the
use of the common preservatives that are also a harmful additive. The ingredients used by the best
rated organic brands are actually good for our skin and enhance the ingredients that are in the
product. They work in synergy with one another. A good place to find top rated brands is Skin
Deep's website. They are rated from 0-10 and I was amazed that some of the makeup that I have was
rated as a 10. I buy very good skin care....or so I thought. I do plan to replace my skin care and
other products as I run out with products that are more beneficial. It's incredible that we have
managed to live longer lives with the advances in modern medicine, but we are exposed to so many
toxins in our environment that we face higher cancer risks than ever. I won't be turning into a
perfect green person...too much to remember and more work, but I have found that we all need to live
a lot greener. It only took some makeup research to make me change my whole attitude on the green
thing. I do hate that term though. Why the need for a label for that? We certainly don't clearly
label our products, but we sure have enough labels for people. |

I do not think that all cosmetics should be banned, though they may be harmful. They should be
disposed of properly. |

You're too absolute. They're not all hazardous.
Personally I use only a natural deodorant brand. But most of the western world uses strong
antiperspirants and seems to be fine.
And the toxicity of makeup depends on the pigmentation and since I paint and many of the pigments
are the same between makeup and art paints I can say emphatically makeup using iron oxides, mica,
titanium, sodium aluminum silica etc are quite safe. Others are not but that doesn't mean ban all
makeup, just restrict what can go into it.
And as for vanity, so is clothing fashion, should we ban clothing or all dress in burka's? |
