No, I say lets drop it and then nobody has to be "racial aware". Like we need something to make
society be MORE aware of race in this country? Are you kidding???
Tell me why a person should be treated differently because of the color of their skin or the body
parts they were born with???
That is what equality is all about right? It's your skin color that determines what you deserve or
don't deserve? Your sex determines what you deserve or don't deserve? |

To define some terms: The American Heritage dictionary defines affirmative action as "a term
referring to various government policies that aim to increase the proportion of African-Americans,
women, and other minorities in jobs and educational institutions historically dominated by white
men. The policies usually require employers and institutions to set goals for hiring or admitting
minorities." In laymen's terms affirmative action refers to requiring a specific proportion of
people hired in a business or working in an institution, such as a school, to be in a minority
group.
My first contention is the logic of affirmative action is intrinsically flawed. Affirmative action
sets out to decrease pre-judices against minorities. The flaw comes in the fact that it does so by
creating further prejudices. You do not fix the POSSIBILITY that a employer will be pre-jusice by
ABSOLUTELY making him be pre-judiced. Yes, some employers may be pre-judiced against black people.
But you do not fix this by forcing them to be pre-judicced against white people in having them make
decisions based on the fact that they need X amount of black people to be employed.
My second contention is that, following from my first contention, the results of affirmative action
will probably be worse than the results of no affirmative action. For Example: Because of
affirmative action, you will have men not getting jobs that they are qualified for because they are
not in a minority and their possible employers need to hire a minority. Affirmative leads to the
very same results that it wants to fix: Pre-judices and their resulting consequences. Affirmative
action sucks! |
