60% Overweight Americans, Holla! |

I agree, but as a midwestern American I will tell you why...many factors..... #1 the fact that most
kids come from a home where 100% of the aduts in the home work full time. Hence the use of
convenience foods, which are simple carbs, and full of horrible nasty preservatives, and by using
fast food as a remedy for the lack of time. Which brings me to #2 growth hormones. The meat that
comes from most farms that supply our main grocery stores is packed full of growth hormones. The
growth hormones keep on working even after the meat is consumed. Scary. #3 Kids/adults are less
active. Instead of playing outside riding their bikes all over the place like my generation did,
they're in front of cable TV, the computer, video games, ect. #4 is disease. There has been a
significant rise in the occurance of disease in this country. I know from personal experience. There
are many theories as to why this is, and I haven't jumped on any one "bandwagon" yet. Like why 5
people from my graduating high school class of 130 have been diagnosed with MS (that I know of).
That's an awful lot. |

Yep pretty much. I was in this restaurant and this lady was complaining that the bench seats and
the table were too small. Umm, her belly was touching the table. I was sitting across from her a
similar seat and table and I had a good foot to 18 inches of space between my stomach and the table.
Americans are in denial that they are fat and extremely fat. The average American male body fat
is 25%. They are suppose to be 15%. Average American female body fat today is 35 to40% they are
suppose to be around 24%. Again, Americans in denial. You are not suppose to be walking around
with 1/4 to 1/2 of your body weight being fat. YOU ARE FAT AMERICA! The number 1 vegetable eaten
by kids in America are French Fries. The average caloric intake by Americans is 3500 calories. The
body doesn't burn that much if you don't exercise. |

There is a rise in the overweight population. Some, however, are not obese and most are not
morbidly obese within the catagory overweight. Grenache is right regarding what region you were in.
I think the rise in the young overweight population is due to lack of physical exercise. My kids
only have PE or gym once/week. When I was in school it was every single day of the school year.
The school lunches are packed with carbs as a result of the outdated Food Pyramid. Carbs
(expecially simple carbs) should not make up that high of a percentage of the diet. Combined with
families with both parents working or single parent families and fast food to compensate for the
lack of time or the lack of energy to make a healthy meal, kids are consuming junk food much more
often than they did when I was a kid. I'm only 39, so it hasn't been thaaat long...lol. My mom
cooked every night, eating out was a treat and fast food was a special treat. We spend time outside
every chance we had. There were not 24/7 cartoons and all of the video games...darn, I'm starting
to feel as old as dirt. : )
It isn't the majority of people here that are obese, but it could get there.
On a side note, I've noticed that kids seem more accepting of curves (girls are not as stick thin
where I live and grew up). I go to pick my kids up and many look actually healthy. Of course,
there are still eating disorders, but maybe more kids and/or parents are beginning to realize that
we are not all meant to be size a size 0 like the pictures in fashion magaizines portray. Maybe
it's just wishful thinking, but I hope more young women are less body conscious and learn to be
healthy instead of one extreme or the other. |

Obesity is a rising issue, but I am skeptical upon the words of "large majority". There is a
difference between having too many overweight citizens than having most citizens overweight;
although the difference is minute. |

Finsch is right, there are too many who are fat but it isn't a majority plus you said "extremely
fat" and that means a lot more than simply being overweight. It also may depend on where you
travelled through because some cities and states are notoriously fatter than others.
The standards for fat are pretty relative. For example, I've dropped over 40 pounds in the last
year and my friends, family, and co-workers all call me thin now, HOWEVER, by body mass index or
clinical standards I've still got 10 to 30 pounds left to lose. So am I fat or not? My peers say
no, the BMI says yes. |

Neither a large majority or even a simple majority, just too many. |
