I agree. In the fact that we are just not debating like we used. And I think the people that put that
they are against what you are saying are confused ,because what they are saying in their columns are
agreeing with what you say and they think that you are wrong. So they are not true debaters either so
keep up the GOOD debates like you do .And we will be able to have a real debate again someday. |

Debating is all about choosing a position or a stance and then defending it. It is different from
simply answering a question because in a debate you are logically arguing a standpoint and trying to
convince the audience by the impact of your style of delivery and the reliability of your notion.
Different styles of debating then follow different guidelines but the basic rule of debating is
simply choosing a side and this basic essence of debating is present in this site.
Hence, a debater is answering the questions posed by the topic of debate and those present in the
mind of the audience while trying to tell his opponents that they are wrong. |

Wrong. A debate goes back and forth. Each participant states his/her case and backs it up with
facts. Now, are you ready to debate or just tell someone when they are right or wrong. A debate also
encompasses a person personal view and approach to the subject matter. |

Why even post this as a debate? If you want a definition, try wikipedia. People debate issues for
different reasons. Normally, a debate goes on until one side has proven, by fact, their point or
until the other side concedes the debate because they are unable to back up their argument. If you
simply want to argue and win, try a bar. Pick a drunk person. Pick your topic and I can almost
guarantee that you will win. |

No debate is getting ideas onto the table and then seeing, just what is the most logical answers to
the quote question or statement. |

You only prove your lack of individual thought. Definitions are never set in stone as they are made
by humans who are different and constantly changing. Debating, under my definition, Is one party
stating a point another party, who disagree, stating a opposing point. This continues on until one
party comes up with a point that is concrete and not disprovable by the opposing party. Thus leading
to two parties coming to a conclusion by arguing. Also if your just going by what it simply means
then you are completely ignoring any more complex procedures of debating. |

No.
Debate has various purposes, and so, components.
Some, are for educational purposes.
Some, entertainment value.
Some, to express opinions in much same manner as voting at the polls. |

Debates are also about learning different points of view and peoples opinions on things which are

Debating is providing evidence as to why your beliefs are correct, and why the other side's beliefs
are incorrect, not just answering questions or telling them they are wrong without backing up your
arguments |

It's the art of proving someone wrong and proving you are right. If you are really good, you can
prove you are right, even when you aren't. ;-) |

Uh, NO! People give their opinions to a statement or question and support it with facts. It's not
just answering a question with a right or wrong answer. |

Basically with the help of debate we get the clear picture about the two sides of any situation or
subject. It is not about questioning someone or even about telling him or her whether they are right
or wrong. It is just about discussing with strong points and evidences that whether the topic is
worthy to be supported or it is to be totally discarded. With the help of a debate we also get to
know what people from the mass think about the given subject or issue and what noticeable points do
they have to support their statement. Thus with the help of debate we get to know the matter better
and also we get the idea about the either side of the matter. Thus it is not just about questioning
or telling something to someone, it is about discussing the matter. |

Debate is more than for or against. It's the ability to see many aspects of the statement. Sometimes
we take the role of Devils Advocate in a debate and put forward views that we don't really agree
with in order to give many different perspectives on an issue.
Indeed it is a dialogue and can often change minds and views.
You have to be clear in stating the case, convincing and able to hold the audience whilst dealing
with the 'opponent'.
Debates are a great way of learning about other viewpoints and can be quite philosophical
sometimes.
The point to any debate is to undermine the opponent and win audience so that your topic or point
is accepted as he correct one.
The interesting thing about debating is that no-one has to believe in what they are proposing, they
merely have to be convincing in their argument. |

I didn't come here to "debate" what I'm For or Against. I am either For it, or Against it. I am OK

I disagree with this statement. A debate is when two or more people discuss their beliefs or
thoughts about an issue and try to convince each other that their beliefs or thoughts are true. Good
debates will be backed by evidence. The main purpose of debates is to express opinions and beliefs.
Then to take these opinions and beliefs and think about them and learn from them. I believe this is
a great site and many people do express themselves and learn from what others say. Debating is not
simply just answering someone question and telling them if they are right or wrong. It is expressing
ones beliefs in a way so that others will agree or disagree with you. |

In a debate, the two parties discuss and negotiate a contentious issue. It is a dialogue, rather
than a monologue, and involves much more than answering questions. In fact, in the vast majority of
formal debates, the two sides will focus on rebuttals, rather than asking direct questions. The only
time that posing a question makes sense in this type of setting, is if the one asking believes that
the other side will not be able to produce an effective answer, or if a response is likely to weaker
his/her position.
Let's not forget that in a formal debate, the goal is to convincingly argue a point and to win the
confidence of the viewers or audience. In a more informal setting, competition would not be as
intense, but the goal would still be to defend one's point of view, which generally involves calling
into question the credibility of arguments made by the opposing side. |
