I think the more exercise the better, but the solution to getting more exercise isn't through Phys.Ed. Class. I think it's finding time at home to go out and walk the dog or go for a run.

I'm not a fan of sport, but one hour isn't enough. It would help keep kids fit.

I agree however I'm lucky and at my school you HAVE to do 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I would add at least another half hour to the existing hour for physical education. A well rounded student is sound in body and mind. Is teaching a healthy and active lifestyle not important enough to be in our schools?

Physical Education aka PE isn't easy for many people. Most people say you should get one hour a day...so yea, I agree.

Definitely because if we don't learn how to look after our body now how are we expected to do it when we are older.

One thing leads to another. Too much food and not enough exercise is a bad formula.
Let me guess, You are a P.E. Teacher. No.?

The UK is struggling with obesity so they should improve PE or maybe just do it outside of school times

I can't believe the government haven't done this sooner!! PE is a key part of our education and ultimately ensures we have a healthy lifestyle. And with the government fighting obesity i thought one of the first things we'd concentrate on is the lack of PE done in school. It is relaxing and fun for pupils not causing them to sweat or anything painful.

Is that all you get? What country do you live in.? I hope it is not the UK. 1 hour a week is terrible. Sport teaches you so much, not just how to do a press up. Apart from the obvious, getting fit (healthy body healthy mind) it brings skills that become vital in later life. Teamwork, communication, problem solving, how to cope with winning and losing. You bond with others creating friendships. It gives a chance for some who are not so academic to shine building confidence. I could go on. I am not saying that it should replace looking into a microscope but is it any wonder we have a nation of fat kids when they only get an hour of sport a week. How can sport ever be considered a bad thing?

Well if one hour isn't enough then how much more should you want? 2 hours, 3? 1 hour is enough if you don't waste time. And not everyone loves P.E.

I am sorry but 1 hour of physical activity is enough and a healthy diet is very healthy but if you were to give them more P.E give them water to hydrate the students during the extended amount of physical activity nonstop or give them a 5 min break after 45 min then continue for them to rest and hydrate because keeping them healthy and teaching them about staying healthy is very important for your jr. High or high school students

Every secondary school I've come across has had a compulsory 2 hours of PE a week anyway. I think this would be enough as it is. But I also think kids who really don't want to do it shouldn't be forced. I hated having to take part in PE, but only because they made me wear a PE kit, which wouldn't be so bad if it hadn't included shorts. Also, all the PE teachers I had never participated themselves, which I found hypocritical and therefore gained no respect from me whatsoever. If the students should do it, so should the teachers, or they are not doing their job properly.

In most schools they get at least 2 hours of PE a week, and the kids themselves should be getting into afterschool/out-of-school activities. As far as I see it the system is fine in this respect. Although I get the impression that alot of these guys that have gone with against, despised PE probly because you were/still are porky little kids that couldn't do sports.. You all seem to have a very blunt very of PE.

1 hour is more than enough. Frankly, I don't think we need Physical Education at all.

"But FinalBoss, children are getting too fat and unhealthy!"
So maybe parents should make their kids play outside. Maybe school should be an hour shorter so kids might be more inclined to play outside. Kids don't need schools to watch out for their health. Where are the parents?

Not to mention all the time that is sucked up by PE. 1 hour almost every day of every year? You could take 4 full year courses in that time, or 8 half year courses. You could STILL get your daily exercise in if you or your parents really care.

I disagree.
There seems to be this belief among society that to get healthier children they should do more running around in school - this i can't disagree with - if i run 80 miles I'd lose more than if i ran 1 (though from where I'm not sure).

I was fat in school - like 228lbs fat - i now weigh 137lbs. This i achieved myself without some odious gym teacher shouting at everyone who can't climb a rope or play tennis well.

Physical education has stopped becoming education.

If the gym teachers took the kids to a gym and said "We need need to do cardio first - for this this and this reason" then I might have been more interested. Playing sports without any reason apart from the athletic boys to have a bit of fun is pointless in my mind.

If I'd been taught about metabolism, and healthy diet, and how to target parts of my body, i might very well have gotten to the weight I am now all those years ago.

No, No, No, Many already take extra curricular activities and some just hate it.

It should be an option for those interested in that sort of thing. Kids should figure out what they like, not what they ALREADY know they hate. And admit it:

PE is more of a blow off class in secondary school, anyway,

My school does 3 50 minute sessions a week minus 15 minutes for changing and that's 1hour and 40ish minutes. By the time we've done games were all out of energy and we can't be bothered, i suppose, to concentrate. I suppose its like after lunch, people have had a run around or played football and can't be bothered, plus more than an hour it very exhausting for a 11-16 year old.

Although, maybe P.e is good because a pupil will discover something he/she likes, whether that be rugby, tennis, gym, aerobics... Etc and will take it on after school. Thus the next generations will be, technically, fitter and healthier

1 hour of physical education is enough in Secondary School as a child goes to school to acquire knowledge and prepare for his future career and not for body building. If more than one hour is allotted for physical education then the child will be so exhausted that he won’t be able to pay attention in the class and this will hamper his learning and understanding of the major subjects which are more vital for him in preparing himself for his future career. Physical Education is kept in the schools as it is the motto of all educational institutions that a child should get the opportunity for holistic development, physical education period is also a source of providing relief from the monotony of continuously sitting in the class room for 5 to 6 hours. It helps the child to absorb more as he is both physically and mentally refreshed.

I disagree. Although I think that all students should have to take physical education, one hour per day is plenty. I do think that students should have physical education every day, but not for longer than one hour. In addition to gym class, Students walk around from class to class all day long. Many play sports and other activities. Therefore, one hour of gym per day is plenty. More time needs to be spent on other classes such as Math and English. Each of these classes need more than one hour per day, but physical education for one hour per day is plenty of time.

Oh yes, walking a few metres every half an hour will definitely increase the health and fitness of today's children!

You are making the same assumption: it is the quality of education, not the quantity that is important.

By the way, we're talking about one hour a week, not one hour a day...

Unless u teach kids how to get fit and stay fit the purpose is defeated.

I have an idea get them on a life plan that they agree with

show the benefits of healthy living

but if your going to use physical education as a weigh to keep kids healthy I'd say that they'll be pretty screwed after graduation

But that is incorporated into physical education. It is not, and should not be, just about telling kids to do 100 press ups and run round a field. Your trendy words of "getting a life plan they can agree with" I presume , in my language, means introducing them to a variety of sports and see who likes what. Whether it be football and cricket like me or trampolining and squash. Positive hobbies for life that bring a multitude of benefits.

I Think 1 hour of physical education is enough if utilize in a good proportion. No body can deny the importance of physical education .There is no doubt that physical education develops healthy habits for life but they are fun oriented. This can also be performed outside the school.

NO I think its enough. If it is headed in right direction then 1 hour is sufficient. But if things are not done in proper manner then even 5 hours are useless.

In physical education one needs commitment and dedication along with right direction. In fact its the quality that matters and not the quantity.

I agree with you. "its the quality that matters and not the quantity," I have gone to my little brothers school and have seen children just sit thru the entire P.E. class! At this rate no matter how long P.E. class is no one will be healthy!

If you want to run around or play sports, you can easily do it outside of school. School should be a place for real learning, where you take advantage of facilities that aren't available outside, such as microscopes for learning about science or expert maths teachers for learning about maths.

Students shouldn't be wasting time on physical education classes. Is the economy going to compete in high-tech international markets by having people run around sweating and breathing heavily? No. It needs people with learning to do that : Real learning - not how to do a press-up.
